The trip to Hooper Island Light is truly an adventure and involves some physical exertion to board the Lighthouse. After a boat ride out to the Light, volunteers will transfer from the boat to a steep ladder and climb up through a trap door on the lighthouse main deck. As access is only available via the ladder, boarding is at the sole discretion of the project coordinator and boat captain. Boarding the light can be aborted if choppy seas or weather conditions make boarding impractical.

Appropriate clothing and footwear is required; no flip-flops, Crocs, open-back shoes or high heels. The boat captain carefully monitors weather conditions and if conditions change or are forecast to change, he retains the right to shorten the workday for our safety. If you have any concerns that you will have difficulty accessing the light, we strongly advise discussing your concerns with the project coordinator.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact Robert Holland,

As a volunteer preservationist, you will receive specific preservation training and you will have an opportunity to
"get your fingernails dirty". If you have specific skills, such as carpentry or woodworking, electrical, welding, etc., please be sure to let us know in the "General Comments" section of the form. Special skills are not required, but we would like to know if you have any so we can better focus your volunteer hours.
